Affiliate Program Marketing is actually a relatively simple marketing model. In essence someone agrees to promote a sellers product or service in exchange for a commission from any sales that are made as a result of the promotion.

The beauty of Affiliate Program Marketing and the reason why it is so popular with so many people starting out to try and make money online is that you do not need a product to sell. You can chose from thousands of products to promote and earn commissions for each sale you make (i.e. you are in effect an online salesperson for whatever product you choose). Additionally, for those who are not familiar with creating websites, you do not need to deal with the payment process and all the necessary security issues that creates.

Generally there are three parties involved:

   1. The "Merchant" who has the products to sell.

   2. The "Affiliate Network" who manage the interaction between Merchant and Affiliate.

   3. The "Affiliate" who promotes the Merchants products through a marketing program.

There is of course a 4th person who actually purchases the product (the "Purchaser").

You will most likely fall into the category of the Affiliate who will decide what products to promote and what program to market these products through.

The Merchant

The Merchant is the person or organization that has the products to sell. They will offer an affiliate program directly through their website and/or will join an Affiliate Network and let them deal with the affiliate program.

The Affiliate Network

Affiliate Network companies manage the whole affiliate program marketing process. They sign up Merchants and agree with them which products they want to promote and what commission will be for these products.

The Networks monitor when a purchase is made through the Affiliate, collect the commissions from the Merchant and pay the Affiliate their relevant commission.

The Affiliate

The Affiliate (sometimes called partner) is the person who promotes the Merchants product through some sort of program. In most cases the program used to promote the product is a website although there are other programs such as pay per click advertising. You, as the affiliate, establish a program through which to market the product. Once you sign up to an Affiliate Network, you can browse through the Merchants and select the product you want to promote using your selected program (e.g. a website).

Now that may sound very easy and in theory it is. However, the reality can be very different. Before you even consider starting Affiliate Program Marketing you need to be aware of the time and effort required in order to really succeed.

Its not the technical side of things such as creating websites, inserting HTML codes, etc. The two biggest difficulties that require a lot of time and effort and result in people giving up are:

    * Getting enough traffic to your website

    * Converting all that traffic into sales.
