Wow, when you receive an unexpected check in the mail, it sure feels great! And when the next one comes, and it's double, you're in seventh heaven. You've discovered the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And the checks keep coming!

That's what it can be like with Affiliate Programs. You start getting money in your mailbox -- or directly into your bank account -- for things other people do!

Of course, there are some things you must do too, but these programs are a great way to leverage your ideas and your time to increase your income.

Let me show you the two main ways people use Affiliate Programs for their benefit and several criteria for you to determine which is right for you -- maybe BOTH.

1. You Can Become an Affiliate of OTHERS

It is very easy to sign up under someone else's Affiliate Program. There are a couple of questions you want to answer first so that you don't waste your time and theirs.

Are you in a position to help others in some fashion?

For instance if you are a coach, consultant or trainer you are always using tools and resources that others find valuable. You often find yourself telling them what to buy and where to get it. People like getting your recommendations.

So, instead of you buying the product for them and possibly marking it up -- or just passing the cost on to them --you give them your affiliate link for that product. They buy it and you get a commission -- a referral fee.

This makes the recommendation much easier for you. You simply say you have an Affiliate relationship with this company because you believe in their products.

Everyone wins: your client gets the items he needs -- at the same price they would pay anywhere else, the manufacturer sells more product, and you make money for your knowledge and effort.

Do you have products, tools or web services that you like, trust and support -- which you are willing to recommend to others?

You do not want to sign up for just anything because they have a program. Your reputation is on the line and can be diminished if you put up a product that doesn't deliver what your client or friend needs.

Besides, if your website is cluttered with different links for no apparent reason, people won't find what they want, and you won't make any money. That defeats the point, doesn't it?

Most of you are aware of Amazon as being one of the first companies to offer an Affiliate Program. Anyone can join - just put a link to them on your site. But if you aren't in position to help others by suggesting specific books, and then enticing them to your site to buy, they can get these items somewhere else. You will have an Affiliate Program that doesn't pay off.

********** So, if you answered, "Yes" to the two questions above, then start looking at what products and services you use all the time and like. For instance, I love AudioAcrobat for recording teleseminars and I like Alexandria Brown for using ezines to Boost Your Business. I feel very comfortable sharing that information with anyone. They always deliver high-value products.

Affiliate Programs are an example of viral marketing -- you never really know who buys or how they got into your system. You just know that the number of clients keeps growing and your check gets larger! The "word" has spread. So enjoy -- and tell more people about your affiliate links!

2. You Create YOUR Own Affiliate Program

You can also create your own program -- having other people promote your products and services. This is more complicated. There are a number of things to consider:

* Access to individuals who might have a need and a desire to "sell" for you. * Promotional ideas to get them actively participating in your program. * Marketing materials for the Affiliates to use to promote your products. * Financial tracking, reporting and paying of commissions.

Web programs exist that make the financial arrangements fairly easy for you.

There are two types: a) an affiliate module in 1Shopping Cart (or one of its branded partners) where you run and control your own program, and b) a specialized, online affiliate tracking service such as Commission Junction or LinkShare. This second option usually requires a hefty minimum in transactions to list your products there.

But there is another way to use Commission Junction and LinkShare. Go there to find a long list of companies you may want to promote -- and sign up as an Affiliate for them.

In summary, I suggest that you start by becoming an Affiliate first. See how it works from the inside perspective. Notice what materials are made available to you and how effective they are. Then when you are ready to start your own program, you'll be far more prepared to help your Affiliates succeed.
